Günther Hartl earned his PhD at the University of Vienna in 1983.
He has been a Research Associate and Head of the Laboratory of Ecological Genetics at
the Research Institute of Wildlife Ecology, University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna,
from 1984 to 1994. Since 1994 he is Professor of Zoology at Christian-Albrechts-University,
Kiel.
His research interests include conservation genetics and game management, man as a
factor of evolution in medium-sized and large mammals, biological significance of genetic
diversity within and among populations, evolution of vertebrate populations in the cultivated
landscape, and relationships between molecular and morphological variation. He is president
of the German Society of Mammalogy and his group has been involved in projects on conservation
genetics in various regions of Europe as well as in South Africa, Peru, and Southeast Asia.
